Malagueta Beach guide: everything you need to know

Malagueta Beach is Malaga’s city beach: a stretch of dark sand a few minutes’ walk from the historic centre, the port and Muelle Uno. You can spend the morning at the Picasso Museum and be in the sea before lunch. In this guide we cover how to get there, what you will find on the beach, where to eat nearby and how to make the most of a stay at La Malagueta.

Malagueta Beach at a glance

  • Length: about 1.2 km of dark sand, around 45 m wide.
  • Location: right in the city, between the port and the La Malagueta neighbourhood, along the Paseo Marítimo Pablo Ruiz Picasso.
  • Services: sunbed and umbrella hire, toilets, showers and foot taps, a children’s play area and a sports area.
  • Atmosphere: a lively urban beach, busy with locals and visitors, with beach bars and restaurants all along the promenade.

How to get to Malagueta Beach

On foot from the old town. This is the easiest way. From the Cathedral or Calle Larios, walk towards the sea and follow the Paseo del Parque or Muelle Uno east. In 15 to 20 minutes you are on the sand, passing the port and the lighthouse, La Farola, on the way.

From the airport. The Cercanías commuter train links Malaga Airport with the city centre in around a quarter of an hour. From the Málaga Centro-Alameda stop it is a pleasant walk along the Paseo del Parque, or a short taxi ride, to the beach. Check the current timetable before you travel.

By car. Parking near the beach is limited, especially in summer. The neighbourhood has pay-and-display street parking, and there are public car parks near the port, such as the one at Muelle Uno. If you are staying nearby, you will rarely need the car.

Best time to go

Malaga enjoys mild weather almost all year, so you can walk the promenade in any season. For swimming, the best months run from June to October, when the sea is warmest. In July and August the beach gets busy from late morning, so go early or after five in the afternoon, when the heat eases and the light is beautiful. In spring and autumn it is quieter and perfect for long walks by the sea.

Where to eat near Malagueta Beach

The promenade is lined with chiringuitos, the classic Andalusian beach bars. Look out for the espetos: sardines threaded on a skewer and grilled over an open fire in an old boat filled with sand. They are Malaga’s signature beach dish, best with a cold drink and your feet in the sand. You will also find fried fish (pescaíto frito), rice dishes and fresh salads.

For something different, Muelle Uno, just a minute away, has restaurants and terraces by the yachts, and the old town is full of tapas bars.

Things to do around La Malagueta

  • Muelle Uno: the port’s waterfront promenade, with shops, restaurants and the colourful cube of the Centre Pompidou Málaga.
  • Alcazaba and Gibralfaro: the Moorish fortress and the castle above it, with the best views over the beach and the bay.
  • Picasso Museum and the old town: a short walk away, with the Cathedral, Calle Larios and countless squares.
  • Sunset walks: follow the promenade east towards El Limonar and Pedregalejo for a quieter stroll by the sea.

Arriving by cruise ship? The terminal is next to Muelle Uno, so La Malagueta is one of the easiest beaches to reach on a day in port. See our guide to things to do near Malaga cruise port.
